The season starts badly for British asparagus

A
very wet
April
has
caused a
shortage
of
most
British
asparagus
.

The short season
,
from May 1
through June, could
be
even shorter
this year
. The f
rosts
and rains
of April
have
cooled
the
soil
and
prevented
the normal growth of
asparagus
.
The bad weather
has
led to
the cancellation of the
British
Asparagus
Festival,
where many
fields were
flooded
.

The
very
low production
caused
 a
price hike
up to
10 pounds
/
kg (
€12.38)
.
Producers
hope
a rapid improvement in
the weather
could save the
season and a
sunnier
June to
encourage the growth
of
asparagus.
